In the early 1960's, Robert Chance and his wife Carol enjoyed square dancing as a social activity. They found that western apparel for square dancers was scarce in the state of Maryland, so in 1962 Bob and Carol started the business in the basement of their Glen Burnie home. Carol ran the store while Bob continued to work as an auto parts salesman. The business was soon moved to its Ritchie Highway location, Bob's former childhood home and site of his father's upholstery business. Saddles, bridles, bits, and other tack were added to the ever expanding inventory to accommodate the English and Western horseman. As business improved, Bob Chance quit his daytime job to devote his full attention to the business, allowing Carol to get off the sales floor and be a full-time Mom.

By 1972 Carol's had doubled in size and discontinued square dance clothing. By 1980, it had doubled again and dropped the English tack and English clothing lines (although we still sell riding helmets). In July, 1989 Carol's Western Wear was closed two weeks for remodeling. Western tack and related supplies were dropped from the product offerings to allow more room for the growing emphasis on western boots and clothing. In 1991 Carol's Western Wear expanded with a second location on Route 198 in Laurel.

Today, Carol's Western Wear in Glen Burnie and in Laurel continues to concentrate on providing western clothing to people who need and want it for its practical applications or who just love the way it makes them look. Our buyers make several trips a year to Denver, Dallas, and Las Vegas to meet with western manufacturers and study the trends and new products. Sales representatives and company officers regularly make trips to Carol's to promote their products, and new inventory arrives every weekday.
